by Ascar (St Andrews) on 17 July 2010I feel for Mr Fox - I too, like so many others have had difficult experiences with Barnetts of St Andrews. The problem is understanding where they are coming from. They are a main VW dealer/Service Franchise and as such have to conform to a rather formulaic way of doing business. They do try but I just suspect that the directors (not so much the staff) of this business are at times a million miles away from understanding true customer service and satisfaction. Just be aware they charge £60.00 per hour labour and if you use them you have to accept this. How to survive Barnetts? Apply to join their 3 Years Plus Club (if your VW's over 3 yrs old) - You'll get 20% off their labour rate for servicing and general repairs plus a courtesy car (if available etc!) Make sure you know exactly what is wrong with your car and what they propose to do about it and agree a FIXED price BEFORE they carry out the work. Give them your mobile number and tell them to call or text you when your car is ready. Take out an extended warranty plan that covers ALL mechanical, electrical and electronic parts plus labour with reputable organisations - I use Warrantywise ( and this is not a plug) which has defo saved me a fortune! Understand the staff at Barnetts in St Andrews have to conform to whatever they are given in terms of customer service training and it may not make you feel as if they are on your side. Their hands are tied! Always get a second opinion if you can! Barnetts - You could do soooo much better in terms of customer service and hence reputation if only your directors knew how to approach this aspect. (3/5)
by Brendan Fox (Largo) on 9 April 2010The garage kept my car for a week. They promised a courtesy car on 2-3 occasions... I was led to believe that I was going to get one three days in a row. Each time I was inconvenienced despite the fact, that had I been kept straight about what they were up to I could easily have arranged transport. After a while they just claimed that there was nothing. They sent away for the wrong part - a further delay. I asked them for an evaluation form... they did not send me one. Friendly enough at the beginning, one or two of them became quite ignorant. Looking at the VW website, apart from writing to the company CEO Paul Willis directly in Milton Keenes there is actually no independent assessment of how these garages are doing... except an internal evaluation... which they probably refuse to offer once they“ve cheesed off a customer. As they have me... A word to the wise.. if you want to buy a new or even a used VW.. do not buy it here... looks quite dear! I shall be servicing my vehicle elsewhere from now on and I shall be telling everyone to do the same. Had my car not been under warranty.. I“m sure I would have been well fleeced. Well unchuffed with this place. I will also be informing their head office of my experience. (2/5)
